100 new shipbuilding jobs created at Ferguson Marine

A further £1 million investment has been secured for the Fergusons shipyard on the Clyde creating 100 new jobs.

Scotland’s Deputy First Minister John Swinney said Ferguson Marine Engineering Limited has received a £1 million Regional Selective Assistance grant from Scottish Enterprise – which will safeguard the 150 jobs already at the site, while creating 100 more.

The Scottish Government said that the move shows its commitment to shipbuilding in Scotland and stands in stark contrast to the UK Government as reports surfaced that Prime Minister David Cameron is set to cut the number of Type 26 frigates to be built on the Clyde from thirteen to eight, a move that the SNP said constituted the breaking of a promise made by the ‘No’ campaign during the referendum.

SNP MSP Stuart McMillan – who was a member of the Ferguson Yard task force – said: “A further 100 jobs in Port Glasgow is tremendous news and shows how this yard and shipbuilding is recognised positively by the Scottish Government. Today’s announcement and the yard’s strong order book shows that shipbuilding has a bright future ahead in Inverclyde.

“Our shipbuilding industry has always had a special place in the hearts of people in the communities of the west of Scotland – and so this very encouraging news will be warmly welcomed by people across the area.

“This investment is a real vote of confidence in the industry and is a significant boost to the local economy. Not only will today’s announcement create jobs but it will give Fergusons’ the support they need to fulfil the yard’s potential continue the west of Scotland’s justified reputation as a leader in the shipbuilding industry.”
