Donald Trump has been dropped as a business ambassador for Scotland by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and stripped by of an honorary degree previously bestowed by Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University.

The news came as a petition calling for him to be banned from entering the UK passed 360,000 signatures.

The billionaire, currently campaigning to be named the Republican Party’s next presidential candidate, has met with widespread condemnation after calling for a halt on Muslims entering the US.

He was appointed a GlobalScot ambassador in 2006.

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “Mr Trump’s recent remarks have shown that he is no longer fit to be a business ambassador for Scotland and the First Minister has decided his membership of the respected GlobalScot business network should be withdrawn with immediate effect.”

His membership of the network was withdrawn with immediate effect.

Ms Sturgeon had described his comments as “obnoxious and offensive”.

Mr Trump, who owns a golf course in Aberdeenshire called for a ban on Muslims entering the country following a mass shooting in San Bernardino.

Robert Gordon in Aberdeen said it had revoked the doctorate of business administration that he was awarded in October 2010.

A spokesman said: “In 2010, Robert Gordon University awarded an honorary DBA to Mr Donald Trump in recognition of his achievements as an entrepreneur and businessman.

“In the course of the current US election campaign, Mr Trump has made a number of statements that are wholly incompatible with the ethos and values of the university.

“The university has therefore decided to revoke its award of the honorary degree.”
