Solicitor who embezzled more than £12,500 given community payback order

A solicitor who prepared false invoices for non-existent work in order to steal more than £12,500 from clients’ accounts and who pleaded guilty to embezzlement has been ordered to carry out unpaid work.

Louise Sutherland, 60, took the money while employed at Graeme Murray & Co Solicitors in Aberdeen in an attempt to save her husband’s business.

The offences became known in July 2013 and Ms Sutherland was ultimately struck off by the Law Society of Scotland before the matter was handed to police.

She has now been given a community payback order for 70 hours.

Sheriff Margaret Hodge said: “It’s been catastrophic in personal terms, she’s lost her reputation and profession and it’s had a big impact on her family.

“I take into account the extreme financial pressure that led to this false accounting.”
