Bank of England and The Beano comics join forces to teach school children money management skills

The Bank of England (BoE) and The Beano Comics have joined forces to teach school children how to manage their pocket money.

In a new collaboration, the two have launched a 12-lesson course on financial literacy, called Money and Me which will be introduced to Scottish, English and Welsh school curriculums from July.

The course will teach children between the ages of five and eleven, the basics of how money and the economy works.

The lessons are a collaboration between the bank and the comic and Tes – formerly known as the Times Education Supplement – will be included in the school’s personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) curriculums, The Guardian reports.

The Bank of England’s governor, Andrew Bailey, said: “Financial literacy is essential for everyone. The bank’s education programme is central to our role in equipping the public with sufficient financial and economic knowledge for their daily lives.”

Mr Bailey said that the programme will “support teachers in giving young people a strong sense of the importance of economic and financial decisions form an early age.”

The bank did not indicate how the Beano characters will be used to teach children about financial terms and information, but the Beano for Schools website provides an idea of how the course will look.

The site’s PSHE resources include instruction from Bananaman on being resilient and Dennis the Menace presenting a course called “understanding our emotions.”

Emma Scott, Beano Studios chief executive, added: “The Beano has been engaging children for more than 80 years and we love bringing that experience to the classroom.

“Our Beano for Schools programme translates complex topics into entertaining and engaging content for both kids and teachers and we’ve had fun producing these unique financial literacy lessons so kids can enjoy learning about money and gain necessary life skills.”
