And finally…That’s gratuity!

An American waitress has been subjected to the full force of a classic internet backlash after flippantly accusing George W. Bush of ‘doing’ 9/11 on Twitter after being left a generous tip by the former president.

The highly controversial President and his wife had left waitress Leisa Smith a $40 tip on a $21.47 bill.

However, rather than the presidential generosity gaining attention, it was the girl’s subsequent tweet about the encounter that became the story.

Ms Smith tweeted out a photo to her 200 or so followers on March 22 of her, the former president and his wife Laura after waiting on them, with a caption that read: “Bush did 911 but he did me a solid and left me a hella tip #”.

But the joke comment did not sit well with many who took to social media to call the waitress ‘stupid’ and ‘insensitive.’

“Make sure & tell ppl directly affected, wives, kids, moms & dads your super funny joke,” wrote user @CoolGreenPines.

Another tweeter said: “What a Pathetic thing to say about George W and his Wife . Did you post that out of meanness, ignorance or stupidity?”

Smith tried to do damage control on her Twitter page, saying, “PSA I DONT THINK BUSH ACTUALLY DID 911” and claims it was just a joke.

The original post has been retweeted more than 5,000 times with memes being passed around the internet.

She said: “I have a couple of friends that use the meme a lot and they were the only ones I was expecting to see the tweet. I was just trying to get a laugh out of my friends but I in no way actually believe the conspiracy. I actually completely respect Bush and I don’t think he actually did 9/11. It was just a little tip at the huge joke that everyone says, and I didn’t expect anyone to see the tweet except my 200 followers at the time.”

She added that the Bushes were “the nicest people” she has ever met and that Bush hates mustard and “his wife doesn’t let him drink caffeine.”

Ms Smith has since deleted the tweet and instead pinned an explanation in its place:
