And finally…Scots corner shops contributing £600m

Convenience StoreScotland’s convenience stores generate annual sales of more than £4 billion, contributing almost £600m in gross value added (GVA) to the nation’s coffers, new latest figures have shown.

The data, disclosed in the Scottish Local Shop Report which was produced by industry body the Scottish Grocers’ Federation (SGF), in conjunction with its UK counterpart the Association of Convenience Stores, show more than seven per cent of all retail sales in Scotland now take place in local corner shops.

SGF chief executive Pete Cheema, said: “For the first time we have Scottish-specific data that shows the enormous impact on the national economy of the independent convenience store sector.”

The performance of independent convenience stores appears to defy downward trend being endured by the big four supermarkets in the face of competition from Aldi and Lidl.

The number of convenience shops north of the border currently stands at 5,602, marking an increase of just over one per cent on 2014, and with one store for every 946 people, Scotland has more stores per head of population than any other UK region.

The industry also supports 45,000 jobs.
