And finally… Royal record

A rare coin featuring Edward VIII has been sold for £1 million, setting a new record for the sale of a British coin.

And finally... Royal record

A private buyer purchased the coin with the face of the Queen’s uncle before he abdicated.

The 22-carat gold coin was part of a small collection of trial sets that were created when Edward ascended the throne, however, they were never released to the public as Edward abdicated in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson.

The Royal Mint has said that the coin is unique because Edward VIII broke the tradition of alternate monarchs’ heads facing in opposite directions because he preferred his left profile, The Guardian reports.

The Edward coin is believed to be just one of two examples in private ownership.

The remaining four examples are in museums and institutions, including one at the Royal Mint Experience where it is on display to the public.
