And finally… bids galore

And finally... bids galore

Whisky collectors will have the chance to buy cargo from one of the world’s most famous shipwrecks, as a bottle of malt whisky from the SS Politician is to go up for auction.

When the SS Politician ran aground off Eriskay in the Western Isles in 1941, it was carrying 28,000 cases of malt whisky, filled with about 264,000 bottles. Residents of the island then promptly ventured out to the wreck to plunder the ship in an escapade captured in the book and film Whisky Galore.

Collectors are now bidding to buy a bottle secured in a diving expedition decades later in an online auction, The Press and Journal reports.

Bids will be accepted until Friday night, with the current highest bid already approaching the guide price of £10,000.

Sellers from the Grand Whisky Auction website have described the spirit as a “very exciting and rare bottling” which offers the chance to buy “a piece of whisky history”.
