And finally...Australian lender introduces cardless phone ATM

Customers of major Antipodean lender ANZ can now leave their wallets at home and withdraw cash from the bank’s ATMs with their mobile phones via Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Samsung Pay, Gamin Pay and Fitbit Pay can all also be used to make withdrawals, as well as PIN changes, deposits, account transfers and balance enquiries.

The move downunder comes as it was revealed this week that contactless payments have become so prevalent in Europe that almost one in two transactions use the payment method over other traditional card payment techniques.

MasterCard said that it expects that by 2020 all payment terminals in Europe will have contactless support.

However, contactless phone-accessed ATMs remain very rare in the UK.

ANZ said its customers can now simply wave their mobile device over a contactless reader at their ATMs, select the card they want to use and enter their PIN.

The bank says that more than one million of its customers use digital wallets loaded with an ANZ-issued card. Between October 2017 and August 2018, ANZ customers made more than 57 million mobile payment transactions worth more than $1.8 billion.

ANZ customer engagement lead Kath Bray said: “With the high adoption rates of contactless payments in Australia, our customers will be some of the first in the world to use their mobile devices to withdraw cash in addition to making payments.”
